The starfish story
By: Loren Eiseley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.

Approaching the boy he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?”

“Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die,” the boy replied.

The man laughed to himself and said, “Do you realize there are miles of miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference.”

After listening politely, the boy bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the surf. Then, he smiled at the man and said, “I made a difference to that one.”

Moral: Everyone can make a difference — even if that difference affects one person.

Our Mission

The OUTEN IKWA STARFISH FOUNDATION is committed to providing a                            forum for the people of South Africa to put their needs forward and explore opportunities to support, connect and grow the community in Business. Education and Youth Development. Furthermore, to encourage and promote cultural activities and reading especially among the Youth.

Taking cognizance of the fact that millions of young people come from disadvantaged back grounds – young people of whom a significant percentage just need a hand extended to them to pull themselves up, our ideals will be pursued in honour of the values portrayed in The Starfish Story.

Community Involvement

Simon has always had a keen interest in community work, which started in his early twenties in George / Pacaltsdorp in the Southern Cape. He is fairly well informed about community and local affairs – being a community leader in the particular towns where we lived throughout the years. While living in the historical village of Pacaltsdorp outside George, he was confronted by the fact that the community – apart from having no electricity – also did not have a proper Post Office and telephone system.

He was a founder member of the Pacaltsdorp Civic Association and led a deputation to the Regional Post Master in 1976. After his submissions to PW Botha – MP for George, Hennie Smit – Min of Coloured Affairs and Louis Rive – Post Master General, he was informed that a full-fledged Post Office and Automatic telephone system had been approved for Pacaltsdorp!

Relocating to Sasol in Secunda into a newly established community in Kinross, Simon was instrumental in settling down the people from all over the country as a community.

As Chairperson of the School Committee of Sasolia Primary School, they succeeded two bring the building of the school two years forward on the Department’s building program.

In 1998 he went as a one-member delegation to Rev. Allan Hendrickse at Parliament in to successfully negotiate that the primary school be upgraded to have standard six (grade 8).
